Saving His Life
The binding design for Saving His Life emanates from the journey in Lee Sandlin’s story of the extraordinary life and bewildering illness of his father-in-law, Russian immigrant Nick Cherniavsky.
Spare design and the luminous beauty of simple materials are at work here. The supple crossed-structure bookbinding is executed in richly colored, Nigerian goatskin. The cover opens to elegant Japanese silk, cloud-patterned endpapers. Turn the page, descend through the clouds, and Nick’s life journey is revealed, traced on a map which is the frontispiece. The story then unfolds, illustrated with his daughter’s family photographs, set in hand-debossed panels. The book is housed in a silk drawstring bag.
This limited edition binding was designed and produced for Sherwin Beach Press. Published in 2008.
